HOME ORGANIZING PROJECT: under stairs utility closet

AFTER

Before Video

Here’s how the space looked before we started — a cluttered space without functional storage to utilize the storage adequately.

After Video

Here’s the finished result — a custom under-stairs utility closet, organized with plenty of storage.

WHAT’S NOT WORKING:

This under-the-stairs utility closet had become a catchall space where anything and everything landed. The original freestanding shelving wasn’t sized properly for the narrow layout, making it hard to reach or see what was stored. Over time, clutter accumulated, and half of the items inside were no longer being used. The smaller nook under the stairs was especially tricky — items ended up shoved in the back and forgotten.

PROJECT GOALS:

  • Maximize every inch of this awkward space

  • Replace ill-fitting shelves with a custom storage solution

  • Declutter and eliminate unused or duplicate items

  • Create clear categories for pantry backstock, household extras, and seasonal supplies

  • Make the under-stairs nook functional without wasting prime storage space

THE HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Removed all items and sorted to donate, recycle, or toss — cutting the contents by 50%

  • Removed the old shelving and replaced it with a custom Elfa system from The Container Store

  • Dedicated the hard-to-reach nook to gift wrap and stationery, with labeled bins for easy grab-and-go

  • Rebuilt the opposite wall with Elfa shelving to hold pantry backstock, household supplies, and grab-and-go items like sunscreen and pool toys

  • Used a mix of woven baskets and white bins for a clean, uniform look with clear labels to keep everything in order
